Q: Do I need prior martial arts experience or to be in shape before starting?
A: Not at all. Most of our adult and youth students start with zero previous martial arts background. Our fundamentals curriculum is structured to teach proper mechanics, controlled movement, and safe falling techniques (ukemi) at a pace tailored to your current fitness level. You get into shape by training, not the other way around.
Q: What disciplines do you teach at Watkins Wrecking Crew?
A: We specialize in comprehensive Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (both Gi and No-Gi) and dedicated stand-up Judo (throws, takedowns, and foot sweeps).
Q: How do I try a class?
A: We offer a free week trial for all new prospective students so you can experience our coaching, facility, and community firsthand. You can schedule your trial directly through our website at watkinswreckingcrew.com/contact or call us at (682) 253-1379.
Q: What should I wear and bring to my first class?
A: For your first class, comfortable athletic clothing works best—such as a t-shirt or rashguard paired with board shorts or athletic pants (without zippers). Bring a water bottle and flip-flops or slip-on shoes to wear off the mat. If you already own a BJJ or Judo gi, you are welcome to wear it!
Q: What is the difference between Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) and Judo?
A: Judo focuses heavily on dynamic stand-up throws, takedowns, foot sweeps, and balance control (kuzushi), with an emphasis on safe breakfalls. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu focuses primarily on ground control, leverage, transitions, and submissions once the fight reaches the mat. Training both provides our students with a complete, well-rounded grappling skillset from the feet to the floor.
Q: Do you offer both Gi and No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu?
A: Yes. We train both traditional Gi (wearing the uniform for grips, collar controls, and friction-based leverage) and No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu (fast-paced grappling in rashguards and shorts, emphasizing underhooks, head position, and leg attacks).
Q: At what age can children start training?
A: Our youth martial arts programs welcome kids starting at age 5. Classes focus on building gross motor skills, discipline, coordination and focus in a positive, structured team atmosphere.
Q: Where are you located, and what areas do you serve?
A: Our academy is located at 5100 W. Sublett Rd. Suite 120, Arlington, TX 76017. We proudly serve students and families from South Arlington, Kennedale, Mansfield, Burleson, and surrounding communities.
Q: What safety precautions do you take during training?
A: Student safety is our top priority. We maintain a sanitized, clean mat facility and enforce a respectful, controlled training culture. All students learn breakfalls and tap-out etiquette from day one, and live sparring is always strictly supervised by our coaching staff.
